Most New Balance sneakers fit true to size, so buy your usual US sneaker size. The 9060 and 530 are roomy enough for wide feet at your normal size, the 2002R, 1906R, 550 and 327 are snugger, so wide feet go half a size up, and the 990 runs a little long, so narrow feet can go half a size down.

New Balance size chart (US, UK, EU and cm)

Most of the New Balance pairs we stock are unisex and labelled in US men's sizes. Measure your foot, find your true size below, then apply the model advice further down.

Do New Balance shoes run true to size?

Mostly, yes. The New Balance size guides from Sneakerjagers and The Sole Supplier both say most models fit true to size, with a few exceptions. The differences between models are mostly about width, not length. A chunky runner like the 9060 has plenty of room, while a basketball shoe like the 550 or a slim retro like the 327 is tighter across the toes.

Always compare sizes by the US number, not the UK number. On the official charts a US men's 9 is a UK 8.5 in New Balance but a UK 8 in Nike, so going off the UK figure on a Nike box can leave you half a size out.

Model notes and where sources disagree

• 9060: The Sole Supplier, Captain Creps and Sneakerjagers all say true to size, and The Sole Supplier says you shouldn't need to size up even with wide feet. It's the easiest New Balance to size.
• 1906R: Captain Creps and Sneakerjagers say true to size. The Sole Supplier finds it slightly small because of a narrow fit and suggests half up for wide feet. Regular feet: stay true to size.
• 2002R: the most debated. Captain Creps and Sneakerjagers say true to size, while The Sole Supplier's three testers and Solefeed found it snug and went half up. Our advice: true to size for narrow and regular feet, half up if you're wide or between sizes. Captain Creps says to wear the same size in the 1906R and 2002R.
• 550: Sneakerjagers and Solefeed say true to size with a narrow toe box. Some guides suggest half down for a snug fit and others half up, so don't size down unless you have narrow feet. The stiff leather softens with wear.
• 530: Captain Creps, Solefeed and The Sole Supplier all say true to size. Solefeed notes a roomier toe box than many New Balance models.
• 990: WearTesters says the 990v3, v5 and v6 fit a little big, and suggests half down for a one-to-one fit. Captain Creps says the 990v4 runs large in length and width, so half down is safe there. Sneakerlens adds that the v6 is narrower through the midfoot than the v5.
• 574 and 327: Sneakerjagers and The Sole Supplier say both fit true to size. Solefeed says the 574 is slightly snug in the toe box and the 327 is narrow, so wide feet should go half up in either.

New Balance width letters (D, 2E, B)

New Balance is one of the few brands that makes some shoes in several widths. The letter sits next to the size on the label.

Many lifestyle models are made in standard width only. Sneakerjagers says the 9060 comes in D width only, and Solefeed says the 327 has no wide version and general-release 550s rarely do. So for most of the pairs above, wide feet should size up half a size rather than look for a 2E.

Women's and kids New Balance sizing

On New Balance's chart, US women's is exactly 1.5 sizes above US men's, the same gap as Nike. A men's 7 is a women's 8.5, and a men's 9 is a women's 10.5. This is different from adidas, where the gap is one size.

So if you're a women's 9, buy a unisex 7.5 in true-to-size models like the 9060 or 530. Women's-specific pairs such as the New Balance 550 Au Lait Caramel (W) follow the same advice for each model.

Big kid (Y) sizes match the men's number on New Balance's chart: a 4Y and a men's 4 are both 22 cm. That makes a 7Y the same as a women's 8.5, so women up to that size can wear Y sizes.

New Balance vs Nike and adidas sizing

• Jordan 1 and Nike Dunk: both fit true to size, so start from that US size for the 9060, 530, 1906R and 2002R. See our Jordan 1 size guide and Dunk size guide.
• Nike Air Force 1: runs big, and Nike recommends half a size down. If you sized down in AF1s, your New Balance size is usually half a size above your AF1 size.
• adidas Samba and Gazelle: compare by US men's size. Remember adidas women's sizing is only one size above men's, so women converting from adidas should check the chart above.

How to measure your foot

1. Put a sheet of paper on a hard floor against a wall.
2. Stand on it with your heel against the wall, wearing the socks you usually wear.
3. Mark the tip of your longest toe and measure from the wall in centimetres.
4. Measure both feet and use the longer one.
5. Find that length in the chart, then apply the model advice above.

New Balance suggests trying shoes on in the late afternoon, when your feet are at their largest, so measure then too. If you fall between two sizes, take the larger one.

What does D or 2E mean on New Balance shoes?

It's the width. For men's and unisex shoes, D is standard, 2E is wide and 4E is extra wide. For women's shoes, B is standard and D is wide. Most lifestyle models like the 9060 come in standard width only.
