Nike Air Force 1 and Air Max Size Guide NZ: Do AF1s Run Big? (2026)

  • 7 min read

Air Force 1s run big, so go half a size down from your usual Nike size, but buy Air Max 1, 90, 95, 97, Plus and Dn in your true size. Nike itself recommends half a size down in the AF1. Wide feet can stay true to size in AF1s and go half a size up in the snugger Air Max models.

Do Air Force 1s run big?

Yes. Nike's official Air Force 1 sizing guide says AF1s "generally run big due to the roomy toe box" and recommends a half size smaller than your usual Nike size. Nike's example: if you normally wear a US 10, consider a 9.5. Sole Retriever and Laced give the same advice.

Nike's fit tips go a bit further:

  • Secure fit: half a size down. The leather stretches and gets roomier as you break them in.
  • Relaxed fit: your usual size. Nike notes the extra toe room may crease more easily.
  • Wide feet: your usual size. Sole Retriever agrees the roomy toe box lets most wide feet stay true to size.
  • Worn as a slip-on: a full size down, for less heel movement.

Laced says narrow feet, or anyone between sizes, can go a full size down. That's the outer limit; most people should stop at half a size. Nike also notes some editions fit differently depending on the upper and midsole, so check the size and fit notes on special releases. Examples: the Air Force 1 '07 Light Bone Black and the Scream x Air Force 1 Low Ghostface.

Air Force 1 Low vs Mid vs High

Nike doesn't give separate advice by cut, and Sole Retriever says the half-size-down rule applies to the Mid and High too. The one difference: the Mid's ankle strap holds the foot more closely, and Laced says that lets you go true to size in a Mid if you prefer. If you're unsure in a Mid, half a size down is still the safe choice. See the Stussy x Air Force 1 Mid and the Air Force 1 Mid GORE-TEX.

Air Max sizing, model by model

Unlike the AF1, most Air Max models fit true to size. The differences are mainly in width.

  • Air Max 1: true to size, say Sole Retriever, The Sole Supplier and Laced. It's a touch narrow, so wide feet go half a size up. Sole Retriever says the '86 OG Big Bubble fits essentially the same as the standard Air Max 1, and advises against sizing down. Examples: the Air Max 1 '86 Jackie Robinson and Air Max 1 Wabi-Sabi.
  • Air Max 90: true to size according to Sole Retriever, The Sole Supplier and most of Farfetch's testers. Laced is the outlier and says it runs slightly big. The Sole Supplier finds it a bit narrow and suggests half a size up for wide feet. Our advice: buy your true size, and go half a size down only if you like a loose-laced look. See the Air Max 90 SP Triple Black.
  • Air Max 95: depends on the release. Sole Retriever says the refined toe box on the 2025 Big Bubble pairs now fits true to size, though it's a little snug on wider feet. Older 95s had a tighter toe box, so go half a size up on pre-2025 pairs. Example: the Air Max 95 Big Bubble Solar Red 2.0.
  • Air Max 97: true to size for most people, say Captain Creps, Laced and Sole Retriever. Captain Creps notes it's snug through the toe box and many wearers go half a size up, especially wide feet. See the Air Max 97 Silver Bullet.
  • Air Max Plus (TN): true to size. All four testers at The Sole Supplier found it fits true, including one with wide feet who found half a size up far too big. The firm upper doesn't give much, so don't size down. See the Air Max Plus Gold Raspberry Red.
  • Air Max Dn and Dn8: Captain Creps says the Dn fits true to size with a snug upper, and wide feet can go half a size up. We haven't found a dedicated Dn8 fit review; Nike's customer reviews mostly say true to size, so start there. See the Air Max Dn8 Palace Safety Orange.

Air Force 1 and Air Max vs Dunk and Jordan sizing

  • Nike Dunk: true to size. Sole Retriever says whatever size you wear in Dunks, your AF1 size is half a size smaller. Your Air Max size is usually the same as your Dunk size. See our Nike Dunk size guide.
  • Jordan 1: true to size, so the same rule applies: half a size down in AF1s, same size in most Air Max.
  • Jordan 4: true to size but snug in the forefoot. If you sized down in AF1s, your Jordan 4 size is half a size above your AF1 size.

The one to watch: don't copy your AF1 size across to other Nike models. Start from your true Nike size and adjust per shoe.

Women's Air Force 1 and Air Max sizing

The same fit advice applies to women's pairs, marked (W) in our listings. Laced says the half-size-down rule for AF1s applies whether it's a men's or women's size. Nike's men's and women's sizes sit exactly 1.5 apart: add 1.5 to a men's size to get the women's (a men's 8 is a women's 9.5), or subtract 1.5 to go back.

So a woman who wears a women's 9 in Dunks would usually take a women's 8.5 in the Air Force 1 '07 Suede Sail (W), and a women's 9 in Air Max such as the Air Max 95 Big Bubble Light Bone (W).

Kids' Air Force 1 and Air Max sizing

GS (grade school) sizes run from 3.5Y to 7Y on Nike's kids chart, with the younger kids' (PS) range from 10.5C to 3Y. A Y size is the same number as men's and 1.5 lower than women's, so a 7Y is a men's 7 or a women's 8.5.

  • GS Air Force 1: still roomy. Laced's editor says the gap between adult and GS sizing isn't big and still sizes down in GS pairs such as the Air Force 1 Low LE Triple White (GS). For a growing child, buying true to size leaves room to grow.
  • GS Air Max: one of Farfetch's testers finds GS Air Max 90s narrower and smaller than adult pairs and goes half a size up. If you're an adult buying GS, keep that in mind.
GS (Y) US men's US women's UK EU
3.5Y 3.5 5 3 35.5
4Y 4 5.5 3.5 36
5Y 5 6.5 4.5 37.5
6Y 6 7.5 5.5 38.5
7Y 7 8.5 6 40

How to measure your foot

  1. Put a sheet of paper on a hard floor, against a wall.
  2. Stand on it with your heel against the wall and your weight even.
  3. Mark the tip of your longest toe and measure from the wall in centimetres.
  4. Repeat with the other foot and use the longer measurement.
  5. Find your true size in the chart, then adjust: half down for AF1, true size for most Air Max.

Measure later in the day, when your feet are at their largest. Between sizes in AF1s? Nike suggests the larger size with thicker socks, or adding an insole for a snugger fit.

Air Force 1 and Air Max sizing FAQ

Do Air Force 1s run big?

Yes. Nike says Air Force 1s generally run big because of the roomy toe box and recommends half a size smaller than your usual Nike size. If you wear a US 10 in most Nike shoes, try a 9.5 in AF1s.

Should I size down in Air Force 1s if I have wide feet?

No. Nike and Sole Retriever both suggest wide feet keep their usual Nike size in the Air Force 1, because the toe box is already roomy.

Do Air Max run true to size?

Mostly, yes. The Air Max 1, 90, 97, Plus (TN), Dn and the 2025 Big Bubble Air Max 95 fit true to size. Wide feet should go half a size up in the narrower models, and older Air Max 95s fit better half a size up.

Are Air Max 90s the same size as Air Force 1s?

Usually not. Most sources say the Air Max 90 fits true to size, while the Air Force 1 runs big and needs half a size down. If you wear a 9.5 in AF1s, you'll usually wear a 10 in Air Max 90s.

Do Nike TNs run small?

No. The Air Max Plus (TN) fits true to size, and testers at The Sole Supplier found half a size up too big even with wide feet. The firm upper doesn't stretch much, so don't size down either.
