It depends on the model. The Air Max 1 and Air Max 90 fit true to size for most people. The Air Max 95 and Air Max 97 can feel snugger and narrower, so if you have wide feet consider going up half a size.
The Air Max 1 arrived in 1987. Designer Tinker Hatfield was inspired by the Centre Pompidou in Paris, which shows its inner workings on the outside, and gave the shoe a window so you could see the Air unit for the first time.
The Air Max 90 has a bigger visible Air window and the classic panelled upper. The Air Max 95, designed by Sergio Lozano, introduced a layered gradient upper and visible Air in the forefoot. The Air Max 97 brought a full-length visible Air unit and a sleek, rippled design.
Nike celebrates Air Max Day every year on 26 March, the anniversary of the Air Max 1. It is usually marked with special releases and retro colourways.
